Family membership

Health insurance provides insurance benefits not just to insured persons but also to their dependent family members. These family members are referred to as “dependents”. Family members must meet certain conditions related to “residency in Japan,” “the extent of the family relationship,” and “income” before they are authorized as dependents.

Applying to certify a family member as a dependent

(Spouse, child, or family member within three degrees of consanguinity other than spouse or child)

Log in to MY HEALTH WEB <JAPANESE> and apply using the Notification of Health Insurance Dependent (Change) (Addition) from the Notification of Health Insurance Dependent (Change) (Addition/Removal).

Required documents:
Documents to attach for dependent certification (see “Documents required when applying for dependent certification”)
Deadline:
As soon as possible after the reason for adding the family member arises
  1. Note: If the Health Insurance Association receives the documents and certifies the dependent within one month after the reason for adding the family member arises (including the date the reason arose), certification will be retroactive to the date on which the reason arose.
    However, if the Association receives the documents and certifies the dependent after more than one month after the reason for adding the family member arises, the date of certification will be the date on which the Association received the documents and certified the dependent.
